My name is Jo Ann Sawyer. I am a water person. I love all activities around and in the water. When I am not teaching swimming, I love to cruise on our boat with my husband in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. I love to water ski, scuba dive and snorkel with the manatees. I have been living in Massachusetts for most of my adult life and have many friends and family in the Northeast. I love to show my northern friends around Florida when they come and visit me.
I have been teaching children and adults to swim since 1970. I am a certified Red Cross Water Safety and Swim Instructor. I teach infants from six months old to respect and love the water. There is no such thing as drown proof, but an infant can be conditioned to help themselves in a water environment. Toddlers and young children need to know how to swim. Each year we lose many adults and children to water related accidents that could have been prevented. I want to help promote water safety in the area through my aquatic program.
Swimming is a lifetime sport. From infants to seniors, water activities can help with physical fitness, rehabilitation and sport. In New England, I was a US swim coach and love to help athletes of all ages improve stroke technique and increase stamina. I also do water exercise and therapy to increase stamina and muscle strength.
I love to scuba dive. I would rather be underwater than on land. Check out Jo Annís Swim and Scuba on Facebook for all my many adventures. I offer scuba diving training for ages 8 years old through senior. Scuba diving is an awesome sport and a new lifetime adventure. I am a certified Advanced Instructor through SDI (Scuba Diving International) and SSI (Scuba Schools International).
Athletes with special needs can benefit from being in the water. I am certified as a handicap certified instructor for both swim and scuba. It is the "CAN DO" spirit that I hope to instil by giving them the confidence and independence that allows them to face their own life challenges and overcome barriers that before might have seemed insurmountable. Through swim and/or scuba diving, I teach children and adults with disabilities to fly. The world of water becomes the forgiving weightless environment of outer space, giving perfect buoyancy to a child or adult who would otherwise struggle on land.
Jo Annís Swim and Scuba School also offers a way to celebrate special events. I organize and run birthday parties for all ages. My themes include, but are not limited to, mermaid parties, discover scuba parties, swim parties and margarittaville parties. I can do them at my tropical lagoon or at your home.
I am married with four children, five step children, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. My father served his country in the Air Force and I developed a love of travel while visiting much of the United States and many foreign countries during his career. Now, I enjoy planning and traveling with my dive buddies to pristine dive sites around the world and in my own neighborhood. I am blessed to have a large loving family and circle of friends.
Thank you for your interest in Jo Ann's Swim School and I hope to see you very soon. Please contact me with any questions or to register for one of my programs.
